UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) – Eligibility Criteria

 

To appear for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, candidates must meet the following eligibility conditions:

1. Nationality

  • For IAS & IPS: Candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • For other services: Candidate must be either:
  • Citizen of India, OR 
  • Subject of Nepal/Bhutan, OR 
  • Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962, OR 
  • Person of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.

2. Educational Qualification

  • A candidate must hold a graduate degree from a recognized university.
  • Final year students awaiting results can also apply, provided they can submit proof of passing before the Mains exam.

3. Age Limit

  • Candidate must be 21 years old and not more than 32 years old on 1st August of the exam year.
  • Age Relaxation: 
  • OBC: 3 years (up to 35 years)
  • SC/ST: 5 years (up to 37 years)
  • PwBD: 10 years (up to 42 years)

4. Number of Attempts

  • General Category: 6 attempts up to 32 years 
  • OBC: 9 attempts up to 35 years 
  • SC/ST: Unlimited attempts up to 37 years 
  • PwBD: Relaxed attempts as per category

5. Physical Standards

  • Candidates must be physically fit as per the Civil Services medical guidelines for admission to the services.

 

? NOTE: Candidates claiming reservation must upload valid certificates (Caste, EWS, Disability, etc.) in the format prescribed by UPSC / DoPT, otherwise the benefit will not be given.
